Neighborhood Bike Works provides educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia through bicycling; it also promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation.
Since 1999, Neighborhood Bike Works has introduced over 4,500 young Philadelphians to the joys and freedom of cycling in the city. Our free or low-cost youth programs, including Earn-a-Bike, Group Rides, and summer camps, reach over 500 youth each year. We also offer programs for adults, and are currently offering programming at two permanent sites — in West and North Philadelphia, and at several off-site locations around the city. We operate a retail bike shop in North Philadelphia that raises funds to support our programs, and offers a training ground for young mechanics.
Shape Up The Shop
Calling all volunteers! We invite all volunteers to join Neighborhood Bike Works' youth in organizing our shop and basement. Let us know if you can lend a hand on December 14th between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Let's make NBW shine!
Bike Church Schedule Update
For the month of December our Adult Repair Coop, Bike Church, will be open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings only. Open hours will run from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday hours will resume in January. Don't let the restricted hours scare you away. During closed hours volunteers will be refurbishing bikes to sell at Bike Church!
Winter Clothing Drive
Cold weather is on its way, but intrepid NBW youth will keep riding. To ensure that youth stay warm on group rides and at NBW events, we ask for donations of cold weather gear. Gear donations will outfit youth with hats, gloves, and jackets. To schedule your donation, call 215-386-0316. We have group rides planned for Nov. 30th and a Kwanzaa Ride in late December.
Upcoming Youth Programs
There is not a season or a month when we don't offer youth bicycle education programs. In December is our annual Winter Bike Build open to graduates. In January we will begin two Earn-A-Bike classes open to any youth ages 8-18. In the spring, youth can participate in Ride Club, Earn-A-Bike, and the Kinetic Sculpture Class. Call 215-386-0316 for more information.
