Proceeds from the show benefit the programs of Neighborhood Bike Works. We hope to see all of you there!
- NBW will be renovating it's kinetic sculpture Squawk Works in the coming weeks for service at and around the art show on the First Friday weekend. Cat will be leading this effort. We have to get working now. If you are interested in this glorious project call the shop and leave a message or e-mail Nadine (volunteers@neighborhoodbikeworks.org)
- SpokesPeople needs volunteers! Contact Ann (ann@beaspokesperson.org or 215-922-7303) if you can help out anytime between now and October 8!!! - Help decorate the city with Bike Part Art! Join the SpokesPeople Street Team as we bust out the sidewalk chalk, mix up the wheatpaste, and tell Philly all about the Bike Part Art Show. Contact Ann (ann@beaspokesperson.org or 215-922-7303) if you can help hit the streets.
- Be sure to check out the SpokesPeople article in the current issue of Liberty Sports Magazine.

The LiveStrong Challenge is a fundraising event, supporting the Foundation's mission of inspiring people affected by cancer. The LiveStrong Challenge takes place in three cities: Philadelphia, Portland and Austin. The Philadelphia portion will take place at Montgomery County Community College. NBW needs help with the bike parking lot there. Shifts of any length (more or less) are available throughout the day. Youth, parents and volunteers who are interested in attending the event should call Andy at 215-873-6695. Lance will be there!
Bike Parking and Parade - Saturday 9/1
NBW will provide a bike parking lot at 49th and Baltimore from 11:30am-7:30pm. There is also a parade and bike ride from 52nd and Market to 49th and Baltimore on this day. If you are interested in riding with us or helping out anytime throughout the day, please get in touch! This event will be a blast... there is a lot of free music, food, and a kids area between 49th and 50th on Baltimore.
Bike Philly and GreenFest Philly - Sunday 9/9
Join NBW's contingent at Bike Philly, a family friendly bike ride celebrating the joy of riding on Philadelphia's streets. We will provide bike parking and technical support during the ride. GreenFest takes over South Street with 100+ environmentally-friendly exhibitors on Sept. 9th from 11am-6pm. NBW will provide a bike parking lot sponsored by Trophy Bikes. NBW will have a table with Boundless Philadelphia distributing helmets at the event. Volunteers anytime throughout the day will be much appreciated!
Help NBW's Six Degrees Campaign!
Six Degrees is a contest in which each dollar and donor counts more than ever: the ten organizations with the most donations by September 16th will receive an additional $10,000! Follow Kevin Bacon's lead: add a link to NBW's Six Degrees badge to your blog, MySpace, mailing list, or wherever. Give as little as $10, and encourage your friends to do the same!

Rewarding Opportunity to Direct Youth-Oriented Non-Profit
NBW is searching for a few good board members. Growing beyond its original “earn-a-bike” goal, NBW now offers a structured after-school educational opportunity for scores of Philadelphia’s youth. Serving young people ages 10-18, NBW offers a chance to learn bicycle repair and earn a bike through regular class attendance. NBW graduates have become program instructors or retail shop mechanics. The NBW board normally meets every other month in University City. If you are interested in contributing a little time and energy to this worthwhile effort, please contact Executive Director Andy Dyson at 215-386-0316 or andy@neighborhoodbikeworks.org or Board President Leland Mayne at leland@neighborhoodbikeworks.org for more information or to apply.
NBW in the Media:
Check out our YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/NeighborhdBikeWorks! Videos are being uploaded all the time, including a brand new documentary about NBW, produced by Andrew David Watson.
Call for Donations:
Help our office get organized! We need a four-drawer, legal-sized filing cabinet in good condition. Our youth programs need 20-inch bike tubes and old t-shirts that can be cut up into rags. Help our programs keep running by donating these items! Call 215-386-0316 or stop by NBW HQ at 3916 Locust Walk.
Valet Bike Parking: Gone are the days of searching for trees and stop signs to lock up your precious bicycle - let NBW staff and volunteers guard it for you! Volunteers are needed to staff the bike parking events on August 26th, September 1st and September 9th. No bike repair knowledge necessary. See "NBW News" section of this newsletter for more info, and call 215-386-0316 if you're interested in participating.
Be an Earn-A-Bike volunteer and learn along with the students!
This is a great opportunity to learn basic mechanics or brush up on the skills you already have. Volunteer at one of our many Earn-A-Bike classes. Youth learn basic repair, job-related skills and how to ride safely in the city. Classes usually meet twice a week, from 4-6pm. The most helpful volunteers will commit to at least one day per week for the duration of a class. Tons of classes will start when school begins in the fall. No bike repair experience necessary. Please send Nadine an email at volunteers@neighborhoodbikeworks.org if you're interested.
Volunteers Mechanics Needed: Put your skills to use at NBW! We are looking for committed volunteers to help with Saturday drop-in sessions. Because these sessions are free-form and do not use lesson plans, we need volunteers with bike repair knowledge. Or as Andy Dyson puts it, "we need the people with the kung fu." Please call 215-386-0316 or email Nadine at volunteers@neighborhoodbikeworks.org if you're interested.
Check out our website for a complete list of volunteer opportunities!!
Youth Programs
Earn-A-Bike Classes: Through our EAB program, youth learn basic bike repair, job-related skills and how to ride safely in the city. At the end of the class, eligible youth earn a bicycle that they have reconditioned themselves, along with a helmet and lock. Tons of classes will be starting up when school starts again this September. Call 215-386-0316 or email info@neighborhoodbikeworks.org to be added to the list of interested students.
Drop-Ins for Earn-A-Bike Graduates: All EAB graduates are invited to Saturday drop-in sessions at our 40th Street and Haddington locations. 9:30-11:30am and 12-2pm at 40th Street, 12-4pm at Haddington. During these open hours, graduates may work on their own bicycles with the help of NBW staff, or earn additional hours towards more bicycles, parts, and tools. The fourth Saturday of each month, staff and volunteers will accompany program graduates on a group ride to an interesting site or event.
Youth Riding Club: Eligible program graduates who are interested in serious bicycle racing should get in touch about our new racing club. This is a rare opportunity to learn with a pro: NBW staff member and former pro racer, Megan Esmonde. Please call 215-386-0316 if you are interested. We need some more students to keep this amazing program running.

Congratulations, Graduates!
Congratulations to our Session Three Summer Campers who graduate today. Campers learned basic repair and riding skills, then practiced these new skills on rides around the city. This session was particularly challenging because we expanded the number of students from the usual 12 to 15! Many thanks to the volunteers, youth counselors, students, parents and families who make summer camp such a wonderful experience. (Sorry, all remaining camp sessions are full.) Congratulations to the LAVA Earn-A-Bike class whose last day was today! We are so proud of all your hard work. We hope you enjoy your new bicycles and that we see you again at Saturday drop-ins and community rides.
